The Capital Times today ran an article on the theme of the Democratic state convention: stem cell research. Make sure to read the full article from David Callender of Madison's Cap Times at the following link. Excerpts from the article are posted below:
"Gov. Jim Doyle will use his speech at the state Democratic Party convention tonight to underscore his support for embryonic stem cell research and to highlight his differences on the issue with his Republican challenger, U.S. Rep. Mark Green.
Doyle's campaign said he will tell fellow Democrats tonight, "Stem cell means so much to me and my family. It means hope. And that's what it means for so many families in Wisconsin, who are struggling with the illness of a loved one.
"I will not let partisan politics slam the door on hope for these families. For as long as I am governor, Wisconsin will lead the nation in stem cell research."
"Defining difference: Democrats plan to make the issue a central theme of this weekend's gathering of party activists in La Crosse.
Before Doyle takes the podium, he will be introduced by Jodi Montgomery, a Verona mother whose daughter Madeline has juvenile diabetes and who is hoping that stem cell research may provide the cure.
Other speakers, including Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton, will also discuss the issue and delegates will be urged to sign a petition indicating their support for stem cell research.
"The choice for voters couldn't be clearer," state Democratic Party Chairman Joe Wineke said in an interview. "Mark Green and the Republicans are out of step with the vast majority of Wisconsin families who support stem cell research" and its potential to save the lives of those suffering from scores of diseases.
Doyle contends that not only could stem cell research hold the key to cures for everything from juvenile diabetes to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, it could represent a multimillion growth industry for Wisconsin and make the state a national and global leader in biotechnology."

Stem cell

I think stem cell research is a great issue for the Governor to talk about. Everyone knows someone who is affected by a disease that stem cell research could potentially cure. I think the people of Wisconsin will side with Governor Doyle and the Democrats on this issue instead of Green and Bush.Chris — 04:28 PM Jun 09, 2006
Stem Cell research is very important. I am sure Madeline's mother will tug on the hearts of many Democrats. A little girl with Type 1 Diabetes is a campaign poster, but it should be a poster for the medical community.Does any Democrat see that Republicans pick the battles and battle ground. Gay marriage, stem cell, Kerry's record in Viet Nam and other issues that bury the real issues such as men and women coming home deformed, crippled and dead. Seriously can't any Democrat see how they can't start a war with lies and all too easily they know how to divide votes based on religion that shouldn't even be allowed because of religious freedoms. They are voted into office because they bring families to church that elect officials that win on the floor of the Congress in Washington and states.
A company started by the Vice President is running the oil fields in Iraq. They were bankrupt before the war and now have profits higher than most oil companies.
The city youth of poor families have little chance with the "No child left behing program." They are left behind, they were never found.
Censorship is the worst I have seen in my 54 years. Days go by when there is no mention of Americans fighting. Americans saw Viet Nam on the evening news, the fighting and killing. 1000s die and 100s of innnocent civilians are killed and wounded daily and it is never on TV or on the front page.
Look at a chart of oil prices and plot the timeline of the war. Republicans and Democrats need to see the mistakes, lies and how the Republicans in high office care none for the people and all for themselves. Corruption is ballooning.
Each day I wake and wonder if a disease that has progressed from a sharp neck pain 10 years ago to a nerve disease that has made it so I need to work at home in order to pay for insurance to pay for insulin I use around the clock, the 29 pills I take daily and soon to fight a lymphoma that is making life hell. Stem cell research is needed. But if Democrats don't pick the battles and quit being on the defensive for heart tugging and religious based issues including gay marriage, Republicans will once again be elected and have people in power that can and have changed laws. Why don't Democrats have commercials just showing gas prices? 2 men in the highest office come from oil companies with ties to the middle east. People come from Mexico to work and we have lumped them all into "illegals."
If Democrats fight for Stem Cell, Republicans will be elected. If Democrats show how we have been raped, Democrats will be elected and then elected officials in power can change the laws.
Democrats need to open their own eyes and not with the alarm clock we push to snooze with Republican bell ringers. Republicans year after year are getting better at ring the bell while Democrats wake to the sound. Democrats need to set the clock and ring the bell.
