BadgerCare Plus gaining support around Wisconsin

The folks at the Wausau Daily Herald have taken note of Governor Doyle’s plan to expand health care coverage for Wisconsin families and they like what they hear.

“Doyle wants to merge Wisconsin's public health insurance programs -- BadgerCare, Medicaid and Healthy Start -- into one plan that would give thousands of adults access and save $20 million in annual administrative expenses.

It sounds like a good idea.”

The combined program would serve about 500,000 Wisconsin residents and assure that all kids in Wisconsin have health insurance.

The Daily Herald editorial board goes on to describe the importance of insuring as many as possible here in Wisconsin:

“In 2004, 91,000 children in Wisconsin were without health care coverage for at least part of the year. And 7 percent of the state's overall population went without insurance for a least a portion of 2004.

Those numbers affect all of us because we pay, in one way or another, when the uninsured get sick. Our doctors charge us more to cover the unpaid bills of indigent patients, and our hospital bills are higher because the emergency room is used by so many poor people as a free clinic. All those costs end ...

Scientists achieve breakthrough in stem cell research

Scientists at Johns Hopkins University have made a breakthrough in stem cell research by helping partially paralyzed rats walk by re-growing part of their spinal cords.

“The work marks a tantalizing new step in stem cell research that promises to one day help repair damage from nerve-destroying illnesses such as Lou Gehrig's disease, or from spinal cord injuries,” reports Lauran Neergaard of the AP.

“‘This is an important first step, but it really is a first step, a proof of principle that ... you can rewire part of the nervous system,’ said Dr. Douglas Kerr, a neurologist at Johns Hopkins Read more...

BadgerCare Plus to expand comprehensive health coverage for Wisconsin families

Making sure families can afford their health insurance is central to the Governor’s vision for Wisconsin’s future.

That’s why the Governor was in Wausau yesterday sharing his plan for expanding health care coverage and cutting down on administrative costs by combining Medicaid, BadgerCare and Healthy Start into a single program: BadgerCare Plus.

Amy Olson of the Wausau Daily Herald reports that BadgerCare Plus would save an estimated $20 million in administrative costs that could be put back into affordable care for Wisconsin families.

Olson describes the difference BadgerCare Plus would make for Wisconsin families: “In 2004, 91,000 children in Wisconsin were without health insurance for at least part of the year; 12 percent of children living just above the poverty line were without health insurance, and 11 percent of children living below the poverty line were uninsured. That could be eliminated under BadgerCare Plus, Doyle said.”

Right now, the Governor’s plan is awaiting approval from the federal government and legislature. If approved, the combined program could be included in next February’s state budget proposal.

Energy, cost efficiency in new state building

Governor Doyle was present yesterday at the opening of Wisconsin’s first “green” office building, the DNR’s new regional headquarters in Howard, WI.

The building “focused on energy efficiency and recycled materials,” and will save the State an estimated $500,000 within 20 years, reports WBAY’s Jeff Alexander.

Alexander writes that Governor Doyle has ordered all state buildings in the future to follow this energy and money-saving model.

According to Theresa Lehman of Boldt construction, sustainable construction techniques can also provide benefits to the health and productivity of those living and working in “green buildings”.
