Governor Doyle doesn’t just talk about stem cell research. Time and again, he has taken aggressive action to move this research forward.

Offering free research licenses to stem cell companies that locate in Wisconsin.

Supporting the selection of Wisconsin’s WiCell as the country’s first National Stem Cell Bank by the National Institutes of Health.

Setting a clear goal for Wisconsin: capture 10 percent of the stem cell market – which could create 100,000 jobs and generate $10 billion – by 2015.

Equally as important are the real concerns of UW-Madison researchers, who say Wisconsin’s leadership in the field of stem cell research could be in jeopardy if Republican Congressman Mark Green is elected Governor.

Governor Doyle and AG Candidate Falk announce plan to address crime lab backlog

Governor Doyle was with Attorney General Candidate Kathleen Falk in Milwaukee and Appleton today to announce a new plan to address the DNA backlog that Wisconsin’s crime labs are currently facing.

Getting criminals off our streets and behind bars is a top priority for both Governor Doyle and Attorney General Candidate Falk. We’ve got to ensure that every community in our state is safe, whether it’s located in Milwaukee, Appleton, or anywhere else.

The plan deals with the backup on several fronts, including additional resources, an increase in the capacity of the crime lab, prioritization of the most violent cases, and increased partnership with law enforcement.

The specifics:

Increasing Resources Committed to DNA Analysis

Governor Doyle will provide $1.22 million to fund 15 new analysts and technicians for DNA testing in his 2007-09 biennial budget.

Establishing a New Case Screening and Prioritization Policy

Crime labs currently do some screening of submissions and have a broad system for prioritizing cases. As part of Doyle and Falk’s plan, the crime labs will establish a case screening and priority policy to ensure that homicides and sexual assault investigations are given the highest priority. For sexual assault and homicide cases without a known suspect, DNA samples will be matched with samples from the DNA database within 30 days.

Developing New Training Opportunities Between Crime Labs and Law Enforcement

As part of the plan, DOJ will establish a new training program to enhance collaboration and partnership between DNA technicians and analysts and law enforcement. The enhanced training program will improve the crime labs’ ability to triage crime evidence, emphasize evidence collection and submission, and promote mutual understanding of how DNA evidence can best benefit an investigation. Illinois enacted a similar training program which also helped to reduce their DNA backlog and improve overall management of the DNA lab. The program will be implemented utilizing existing resources.

The Governor won the second debate just like he won the first – by presenting a clear vision for moving Wisconsin forward and making life more affordable for working families.

Meanwhile, Congressman Mark Green once again attempted to hide his extreme Washington record behind misleading rhetoric.

Congressman Green says he wants to make health care more affordable. But in Washington, he’s voted to give away billions to the big drug companies in exchange for campaign cash.
Congressman Green says he wants to put our kids first. But in Washington, he’s voted to slash federal student aid and public education funding.
Congressman Green says he supports working families. But in Washington, he’s voted against raising the minimum wage and for giving tax breaks to companies that ship Wisconsin jobs overseas.
Congressman Green tries to claim he supports stem cell research, but in Washington, he has voted against federal funding for stem cell research and voted eight times to ban or criminalize lifesaving stem cell research.

Secretary Albright and Governor Doyle Talk Education at UWM

Yesterday, Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright under President Bill Clinton visited the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee to speak with students about the importance of education and what it takes to keep Wisconsin competitive in the global marketplace.

“It’s refreshing to leave Washington and come to a place like Wisconsin where leaders like Governor Doyle realize that education must be a priority,” Secretary Albright said yesterday. “Governor Doyle is a leader who understands that investments in education and investments in our workforce are the only way we’re going to compete and win in the global marketplace.”

Governor Doyle also spoke at the event, highlighting his efforts in Wisconsin to invest in education so the state remains competitive in the global economy.

“Secretary Albright has led a remarkable life,” Governor Doyle said. “She understands, as we do here in Wisconsin, that we now live in a global marketplace. A graduate here at UWM isn’t just competing with someone from Illinois or New Jersey. They’re competing with someone in Indonesia and New Delhi. We’ve got to focus on the high end.”
